APE has gained a lot of experience over the past 15 years of working with plastic sheet piling, to the point where APE have been described as a leading authority in this field. During this time, APE have provided technical support to all the major suppliers, present and past, from the original Bankmaster (Bendex) pile; to Plastic Piling Limited (HL Plastics), Redman Fisher (Creative Pultrusion), Expotech and VSP (CMI).

All end users seem aware of the benefits of plastic piling; it can be made from recycled material; it does not rust or rot; no risk of sparking; maintains its original appearance over time, not affected by salt water, resistant to the majority of chemicals; resistant to marine borers and rodent attack; easily cut or bored; maintenance free; lighter to handle; and is available in a variety of colours.

Plastic piling has proven itself in many diverse applications:
Bank Retention and restoration.
Drainage culverts and channels
Inland marina, waterway walls and banks
Blocking ditches on peat bogs and other nature reserve applications.
Permanent shuttering
Cut-off walls, either water or contaminated land.
Soil boxes, railway ballast retention and compost containers.
Temporary works – such as shallow utility trenches.

Traditional applications are clearly waterways related, such as retaining walls, erosion and scour protection. These applications benefiting from the increased longevity of the product and its resistance to natural causes of deterioration such as oxidation or biological attack.

However in the UK, there has been a lack of product development and diversity, such that plastic piling has yet to provide a comprehensive solution to all of these. Simply, a range of products is important, as each application will carry with it several unique or distinguishing restrictions and requirements. Within this range the greater the diversity of the specifications, the better the chance of matching sites ideal criteria.

The main areas of concern centre around:
The ability of the piles to be driven to depth and driven accurately;
The lower load handling ability of the plastic piling products available.
More recently an area of concern has centred around the aesthetics of the installed system, this is common to all sheet piling systems, steel, plastic and composite. Piling whilst a superior technique from a longevity viewpoint, it does have regular corrugated appearance once installed.

Globally, traditional market leaders have produced a range of products, each designed to offer greater stiffness for installation and load bearing,

Domestically, ranges typically consists of products that can be produced within the current restrictions of available tooling, in effect a range has been produced for the sake of a range, rather than offering substantial improvements between product offerings.

All original producers maintained traditional steel shapes, thinking that this visual connection was more important than optimising the product for the application. This in turn creates a product range limited by the use of plastic as a material, rather than fully optimised to maximise the benefits of plastic.

Not one has ever paid attention to the aesthetics of the installed products.................... until now!

New Adoptive Technology

APE is working with key suppliers, Industry experts and end users to address these concerns and is the first in the UK to offer a range of products that cannot be considered as "me too" replicas.

APE range of products represents not only the best plastic designs, but are the first to use adoptive technology. APE's plastic piles are designed to work with other methods and materials, the MultiLock and ProLock work with timber and steel, the Truline products work with gravel and concrete.

General advantages of Plastic Piling
Longevity – resistant to biological degradation, rust, scratches, abrasion, seawater and UV.
Is manufactured from recycled plastic.
Has no risk of sparking.
Manufactured in Europe, so reduces the environmental impact of the cost of transport – when compared to US imported products.
Maintains original appearance over time.
Is resistant to the majority of chemicals.
Is resistant to rodent and marine borer attack.
Can be easily cut.
Is maintenance free.
Is lightweight and so manual handling is less of an issue.
Has the ability to create curved walls.

APE's supporting products and technology

APE has spent a considerable amount of time and money developing new pile driving equipment, to improving installation speeds and in some case making installation possible. APE has also produced a wide range of sleeves, caps and mandrels to make the flexible piles temporarily more rigid. This only gets you so far, so our attention turned to the piles themselves.
